Campbell’s Soup Cans by Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August 6, 1928. Warhol is best known for his exploration of Pop Art and for making multiple images of mass produced objects. His most famous work of this type is the Campbell’s Soup cans.

The Campbell’s Soup cans series was first exhibited in 1962 at Warhol‘s first solo pop art exhibit. The showing took place in November of 1962 at Eleanor Ward’s Stable Gallery. The collection consists of 32, 20 by 16 inch canvases. The canvases were displayed on a shelf and the intent was to resemble an isle in a grocery store. Each canvas has a different flavor of Campbell’s soup. There are 32 canvases because, at the time, Campbell Soup Company produced 32 different varieties of soup. The canvas depicting tomato soup was the first of the series. This exhibition at the Stable Gallery also included the famous Marilyn Monroe images.

There is no evidence that Warhol intended the canvases to be displayed in a particular order. Today, the Museum of Modern Art, in New York, displays the canvases in chronological order of which they were completed.

When Warhol began painting the cans in 1962, the Campbell Soup Company actually sent out lawyers to investigate. Campbell’s executives could not have been prepared for the tremendous impact the paintings would have on their sales. Warhol would actually sign cans of soup and then sell them as souvenirs.

In 1997, the Campbell Soup Company acknowledged the importance of the paintings, not only for the company, but for the Pop Art movement, by sponsoring the ‘Art of Soup’ Contest. The winning piece was a sheet of stamps depicting the soup cans. Each stamp showed a different flavor of Campbell’s soup. The individual responsible for the stamps was given a $10,000 check at a ceremony at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.

Warhol often used everyday images in his work. He believed that art was intended for all people, not just a select few. He used popular images in order to appeal to the masses. The soup can series challenges the idea that art must be creative and original. Warhol claimed that he was inspired to use the soup cans in his work because, as a child, he would eat Campbell’s soup every day. He wanted to paint something that he thought was beautiful yet something that people see every day and never really think about it. Many people believe that the Campbell’s Soup can series is responsible for shaping the Pop Art movement. His work has inspired a generation of artists to find beauty in everyday items and to see art in even the seemingly mundane.

The Foundation gave us access to a wide selection of work Andy and encouraged us to explore his art to create something truly unique.

Questo รจ un meraviglioso effetto , del bellissimi quadri di Andy Warhol …. Pittore [American Pop Artist, 1928-1987] Born Andrew Warhola, August 6, 1928, in the industrial city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Andy Warhol is best known for his exploration of Pop Art, mass producing images of mass produced objects. His most famous works depicted Campbell’s soup cans. Enlarged, hand-painted or silkscreened, framed, and hung in an art gallery, Warhol succeeded in turning these mundane images into ironic “art”. Warhol experimented in media such as film, sculpture, paint, and silkscreen, but perhaps his greatest work was his invention of himself as an international celebrity and pop culture icon.

Andy Warhol Paintings

January 18th, 2011 No Comments   Posted in Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol was responsible for the introduction of a new school of thought in painting. Before Andy Warhol, painting was considered to be the something related to the depiction of the elites and the aristocrats. Warhol contradicted these pre-existing notions in his paintings. He said that paintings can draw their inspiration from the most common place things in life. The painter should just have the right mind to be able to portray it.

Warhol drew his attention from varying things. As a matter of fact, the inspiration behind his paintings has often amused the artists. Warhol used a ‘soup can’ image as his inspiration and made many paintings that revolved around the young people. Warhol shoe painting is yet another master-piece by the artist. In this painting he amalgamated bright colored shoes against the backdrop of a dark shade. This painting became quite popular and led Warhol‘s journey into the Television and media. Warhol was also hugely inspired by the journey of Marilyn Monroe. Her transition from being a common lady to being the most celebrated artist of her era was fascinating to Andy. Andy painted many paintings of Marilyn Monroe. The interesting part is that all these paintings that he made of Marilyn Monroe are an adaptation of a single picture of hers.

Andy also picked up the controversial issues of the society and portrayed the problems related with them in his paintings. He released many series that were based on the social and cultural problems of his times. His gun series of paintings is still a topic of much discussion amongst the art critics. These paintings promulgated in the public eye the disadvantages of the increasing use of guns in the American society. Andy Warhol paintings provided food for thought to many people. They still do incite people to think.

Throughout his life, Andy Warhol tried to see inspiration and motivation in things that make life of the common. Whereas he was a celebrated artist, his works speak purely of all the attraction that he held for the life of the common.

Warhol painted to promulgate issues that were considered trifle or mere or below standard in the painting era that existed before him. He carved his niche. The best part about Andy Warhol painting was that his art was affordable. The prices were not the kind that would have left you bankrupted. Hence, many art lovers, irrespective of their financial positions, were able to afford Andy Warhol original pieces. Lately, many of Andy Warhol Paintings have found place in different streams like fashions, media etc. This is because Andy‘s paintings have been very influential in molding the thought process of millions in the society.

A Review of Andy Warhol Pictures

December 6th, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Andy Warhol

Decades ago Andy Warhol pictures were a real revolution to the world of art. All the important aspects of our culture have been more or less shaped in his pictures and that’s a fact whether you love him or hate him (and most people either do the first or the second). Pop art would never have done what it has already if it wasn’t for Andy Warhol and his pictures. He was way ahead of his time and helped define the genre.

The first pictures, in which people can actually see that the fame of the artist and his status, along with the work of art, presented as a fetish cult status are far more important than the work itself, were the ones of Andy Warhol. His pictures are also the first place where people can find synthesized and differentiated high and low art. Artistic appreciation of the popular culture presented as a thing not less worthy of administration than any other culture coming before or after is shown in Andy Warhol pictures more than in the works of any other artist before him.

Andy Warhol posters were hanging all over my room when I was in college. Actually the first Andy Warhol picture I saw ever saw was the cover of the first album of a popular at this time group called the Velvet Underground. The picture itself was one of his most famous ones – the picture of a banana which you’ve probably seen lots of times virtually everywhere. I can admit that I discovered the pictures of Andy Warhol just because The Velvet Underground were big fans of his and I on my turn was one of the biggest they had.

I can never deny originality of Andy Warhol, even not being such a fanatic about him anymore. Some people find it strange to call original a person who during his entire life did nothing else but copied other people’s works, but I still think he was real genius. Most people don’t ever consider that such works like advertising works could be called art, at least till they see an Andy Warhol picture. After that people’s eyes do change and this is enough to prove that there is some real value in Andy Warhol. And even if he blew my mind when I first saw his pictures in college, I don’t think he could be called an ill wind as in the saying “it is an ill wind that blows no mind”.

The Whimsical Andy Warhol

November 27th, 2010 No Comments   Posted in Andy Warhol

Talk about pop art and no other name comes to mind first before Andy Warhol. Born as Andrew Warhola on August 6, 1928, he is a famous painter, printmaker, record producer, filmmaker and author from America. Also popular for coining the term “15 minutes of fame”, but his art has endured decades of fame and his style has become immortal in the pop art world. He is a member of extremely diverse social communities such as wealthy people, Hollywood celebrities, renowned intellectuals and even bohemian street people. The Andy Warhol Museum is found in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Warhol‘s hometown. His 1963 painting Eight Elvises was bought for the price of $100 Million which is considered a benchmark price that has only been attained by Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Gustav Klimt. He has also been the topic of many books, films (documentaries and features) and exhibitions.

He studied commercial art at the School of Fine Arts at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now called Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh. In 1949, he went to New York City to pursue a profession in magazine advertising and illustration. He became famous in the 1950s because of quirky drawings of shoe ads. He also worked as an album cover and promotional materials designer for RCA Records.

On July 9, 1962, he held his first solo art exhibition at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles. This was also the debut of pop art in the West Coast. Also in the 1960s, he started making paintings featuring Campbell’s Soup Cans, as well as celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor and Muhammad Ali.

He died in February 22, 1987 because of cardiac arrhythmia after a gallbladder surgery.
