25. Learning from and Responding to Financial Crisis I (Lawrence Summers)

January 21st, 2012 No Comments   Posted in Famous Art

Financial Markets (ECON 252) Professor Summers, former US Treasury Secretary and former President of Harvard University, in this the first of two lectures in honor of former Yale Professor and Council of Economic Advisors chairman Arthur Okun, offers thoughts on the role of monetary policy in economic fluctuations, past and present. In the “Okun period,” ending about when Okun died in 1980, the monetary authorities were very much involved in actually creating economic contractions. Inflation would repeatedly get out of control, the Fed would hit the brakes, and the economy would slow. But, that is not the story of the economic cycles of the last two decades. Recent economic cycles appear to be connected with factors endogenous to the financial system, such as bubbles or cycles of complacency among lending institutions. Summers argues that to understand the financial markets and the economy, we must consider models of multiple equilibria, such as bank run models, where a change in confidence may shift the economy drastically without any change in fundamentals. 00:00 – Chapter 1. Black Swan soundtrack – Vitaliy Zavadskyy

January 15th, 2012 No Comments   Posted in Famous Art

I had the craziest dream last night, about a girl who was turned into a swan. But her prince falls for the wrong girl and she kills herself.DISCLAIMER: FAN MADE! Composers facebook fanpage: – www.facebook.com Composers myspace: – www.myspace.com I thought of doing my own orchestration of part of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Swan Lake’ but by the time I needed to do this i already had this little melody which I thought would suit parts of this movie. So i decided not to touch the ‘Swan Lake’ for now atleast. About the movie. The Story: (As taken from Apple trailers) BLACK SWAN follows the story of Nina (Portman), a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her retired ballerina mother Erica (Barbara Hershey) who zealously supports her daughter’s professional ambition. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with

Bach, Toccata and Fugue in D minor, organ

January 11th, 2012 No Comments   Posted in Famous Art

Bach’s most famous organ piece, with a bar-graph score. FAQ Q: Can I download a version to play on my computer/iPod/iPad/iPhone/etc.? A: Yes, you can get that here: musanim.cerizmo.com Q: Where can I get free sheet music for this piece? A: Sheet music for this can be found here: tinyurl.com Q: Who wrote Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor? Q: Isn’t that like asking who’s buried in Grant’s Tomb? A: Heh-heh. A theory has recently (1981) been put forth that JS Bach did not write this piece. A brief summary of the supporting evidence for this theory can be read here: en.wikipedia.org Q: What’s wrong with synchronization? A: I don’t know, but it appears that if you use this URL, it works better: www.youtube.com Q: Where can I get the mp3 of this? A: You can download it here: www.musanim.com Q: What does the piece look like as a whole? A: There are versions you can print out here www.musanim.com The ‘scroll’ version is for cutting out and taping together to form a long strip. Q: Where can I get the MIDI file that this was made from? A: I’m not sure it’s exactly the same, but the closest I could find was this: www.musanim.com Q: Hey, what happened to my question/comment? A: Questions answered in the FAQ, and comments with nothing to do with the video (“spam”), are removed. If you posted a comment and don’t know why it’s gone, email me (stephen at musanim dot com) with “YouTube comment” in the subject line. Q: How did you make this video? A: You can read about it here: www

Super Mario Bros. on a Sidewalk

January 9th, 2012 No Comments   Posted in Famous Art

One day the kingdom of the peaceful mushroom people was invaded by the Koopa, a tribe of turtles famous for their black magic. The quiet, peace-loving Mushroom People were turned into mere stones, bricks and even field horse-hair plants, and the Mushroom Kingdom fell into ruin. The only one who can undo the magic spell on the Mushroom People and return them to their normal selves is the Princess Toadstool, the daughter of the Mushroom King. Unfortunately, she is presently in the hands of the great Koopa turtle king. Mario, the hero of this story (maybe) hears about the Mushroom People’s plight and sets out on a quest to free the Mushroom Princess from the evil Koopa and restore the fallen kingdom of the Mushroom People. You are Mario! It’s up to you to save the Mushroom People from the black magic of the Koopa! This video was part of my Bachelor thesis at the University of Applied science and art Hannover. The Super Mario Bros. game, released on the Nintendo Entertainment System, is not longer bound to the television size and get interactive with a new environment. The emphasis of my thesis is on the matchmoving work. It is the process of matching CG elements into live-action footage.

Pachelbel’s assize in D Major – Very nice version

January 8th, 2012 No Comments   Posted in Famous Art

This is one of the greatest hits in the classical world which was composed in the 1680′s by Johann Pachelbel. Sight-reading it with colleagues on 2 Guadagnini,1 Stradivari Violin and a Steinway in Sweden at 3 am :-) Probably the most juicy canon on YouTube!!! :-) www.alexandergilman.com ——————————————————————————– Pachelbel’s Canon, also known as Canon in D major, or more formally Canon and Gigue in D major for three Violins and Basso Continuo (Kanon und Gigue in D-Dur für drei Violinen und Basso Continuo), is the most famous piece of music by Johann Pachelbel. It was written in or around 1680, during the Baroque period, as a piece of chamber music for three violins and basso continuo, but has since been arranged for a wide variety of ensembles. The Canon was originally paired with a gigue in the same key. The piece, whose score was discovered and first published in the 1920s, and first recorded in 1940 by Arthur Fiedler[1], is particularly well known for its chord progression, and is played at weddings and included on classical music compilation CDs, along with other famous Baroque pieces such as Air on the G String by JS Bach (BWV 1068). It became very popular in the late 1970s through a famous recording by the Jean-François Paillard chamber orchestra. A non-original viola pizzicato part is also commonly added (in a string orchestra or quartet setting) when a harpsichord or organ player is not used to improvise
